Essential Oil Information
What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are extracted directly from the bark, flower, leaf, seed or root of a plant or tree.
They are entrenched in history with the Egyptians and Romans using essential oils to ward off illness, perfume and anoint their bodies. There are over 300 biblical references for Essential Oils such as Myrrh, Frankincense, Lavender (spikenard) which show how us how important oils were and still are.
Aromatherapy is the use of therapeutic oils extracted from natural plants. The extraction methods vary for each plant but the most common is steam distillation.
How Do I Use Essential Oils?
There are several methods of Aromatherapy with Essential Oils that you can do at home:
1) direct inhalation - put a few drops of Essential Oil into your palm hold close to your nose and breath in deeply or add a few drops of your favourite to bath water.
2) diffusion - a diffuser has a reservoir to hold a small amount of water to which Essential Oils can be added. The micro-fine vapor disperses into the air to rid unpleasant odors and bacteria as well as relieving stress, respiratory discomfort, uplift your energy, emotions and mood.
3) steam - place a few drop of Essential Oil in hot water. Cover your head and the container taking care not to burn your skin. If you have respiratory problems, cold or flu breathing in deeply and slowly will relieve the congestion.
They may be applied topically to the temple, behind the ears, over vital organs or to the bottom of your feet. Therapeutic massages use Essential Oils before, during or after the session.
The oils can also be used for cleaning as they are antibacterial. For example: add a few drops of Lemon or Thieves (YL) to your dishwasher, washing machine or spray bottle for cleaning various surfaces.
Essential Oils can be used for Pet Care. For example: Roman chamomile will help sooth minor discomforts or wounds. If your pet has high anxiety, try preparing a spray of lavender and water - apply to their sleeping area. Caution: there is some controversy over using Tea Tree oil on your pets so I would suggest avoiding it.
Essential Oil Properties
What makes Essential Oils so amazing are their many PROPERTIES. Essential Oils have one or more of the following: anti-microbial, anti-fungal, analgesic, antibacterial, antidepressant, anti- inflammatory, antioxidant, aphrodisiac, astringent, carminative, digestive, diuretic, expectorant, hypertensive, insecticidal, laxative, sedative, stimulant and tonic properties.
Precautions using Essential Oils
Some caution and safety needs to be exercised when using 100% Pure Essential Oils as they are highly concentrated. Caution should be exercised with citrus oils such as Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit as they are highly phototoxic. Avoid using on skin exposed to prolonged sunlight or UV rays.
I do not recommend using Essential Oils and/or Blends if you may be pregnant or nursing. Exercise caution for children under the age of six. For example safely use a diffuser with a few drops of Eucalyptus Radiata or R.C. (YL) to relieve childrens cold and congestion at bedtime.
Also, if you have been diagnosed by your physician with an illness or condition, it is very important to consult with your doctor before using any essential oils or blends to avoid contraindications. For example: if you have been diagnosed with High Blood Pressure (hypertension) it is recommended avoiding using Sage and Thyme Essential Oils. If diagnosed with cancer, melanoma or skin cancer, additional caution must be used by avoiding essential oils such as Anise, Bay, Bergamot, Cinnamon Bark and Cinnamon Leaf, Grapefruit, Sweet Orange, Laurel, Ho leaf and Lime.
